Andover Bowling Club

Andover Bowling Club

If you are an experienced bowler and are looking for a competitive Club, you could do no better than Andover Bowling Club. We are now one of the most successful Clubs in our area; we also benefit from our location, being able to take part in three leagues, Basingstoke & District, Whitchurch and Salisbury and District.

History of Andover Bowling Club

We have been reliably informed that Bowling is a very old sport in Andover. We know it was being played here in 1660 because a lease to the Common Acre (part of what is now the Recreation Ground) stipulated the land could be used for the pasturing of sheep and lambs but they must be kept off the bowling green.

There was another bowling green at the Charlton end of the town at the what is now The Magic Roundabout. The original pub there was Bowling Green House and the bowling green would now be under the roundabout at the front of the pub.

Over three hundred years later we haven’t moved far and are still situated in the Recreation Ground in Andover. We have our own parking area, our Green has 6 Rinks and has very active league teams for both men and women and a mixed league.

Club Facilities & Membership

Over the last few years our Club has had an excellent entry of new members, most of whom have never played bowls before; it’s been great to see quite a few of them taking part in club competitions with some getting into the finals.

Because we are very keen to encourage new bowlers to the sport and of course, to our Club, we do plenty to support them and believe the following initiatives, together with the friendly atmosphere, have played a part in attracting so many to join us.

A totally new bowler has a fantastic 50% reduction on the annual subscription for the first year. We have two club coaches, plus a valuable mentor/buddie scheme in operation, where one of our experienced bowlers is assigned to the new player to give practical help and advice on all aspects of the game and the Club. We have produced two booklets full of helpful information to assist new bowlers.

On Tuesday nights we have a Club Night; the bowling is good fun. There is usually a prize of a bottle of wine and it’s a lovely way to learn about the game and to meet other Club Members.

During the winter we have a club social evening once a month which is very well attended.

Full Annual membership is £80.00 but is offered to new bowlers, again this year at a 50% reduction of the standard fee, at only £40.00.

Associate Members can enjoy watching the games have a drink in the Clubhouse, and join in any Social events for a fee of £8.00
